Central Bank Governor Lisa Cook has ignited a historic legal fight. She is taking on President Donald Trump, the entirety of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and the current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. Her lawsuit challenges her recent exclusion from the office, which she claims was carried out unlawfully.
Cook’s legal offensive is led by her private attorney, Abbe Lowell. In her lawsuit, she’s asked for a temporary restraining order to stop her firing from taking effect while the case is resolved. This asks the U.S. District Court for help in Washington, D.C., which will be hearing this request shortly. Judge Jia Cobb will be the judge on the case.
Cook’s claims of mortgage fraud are grave. These assertions are credited to Bill Pulte, the FHFA Director. Cook allegedly signed false documents in connection with two residential dwellings, one of which is in Atlanta and the other in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Furthermore, she faced accusations of misrepresentation about a condo in Cambridge, MA and other residences in her government ethics disclosures. In response, Pulte has further ratcheted up his allegations by filing a second criminal referral against Cook with the Department of Justice.
In response to these allegations, Abbe Lowell characterized the situation as “an obvious smear campaign aimed at discrediting Gov. Cook by a political operative who has taken to social media more than 30 times in the last two days and demanded her removal before any review of the facts or evidence.” Lowell further asserted that “nothing in these vague, unsubstantiated allegations has any relevance to Gov. Cook’s role at the Federal Reserve, and they in no way justify her removal from the Board.”
Obviously, President Trump is fighting back against Cook’s legal maneuvers. His objection to Judge Cobb to her request for a temporary restraining order has already been denied. The central bank has called on Judge Cobb to issue an expedited ruling. This would provide the best chance to expedite resolution of the highly contentious dispute.
Regardless of which way the developments go, Cook’s legal team is fully prepared to continue to battle. They will challenge, not just her removal’s legitimacy, but the integrity of the allegations that prompted her removal. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for governance within the Federal Reserve and set a precedent for how similar disputes are handled in the future.
