Eleanor and Lyle Gittens, the world’s longest-married couple, hold the incredible record of 83 years together. Eleanor, 107 and Lyle, 108 have their ages added together to exceed an astounding 216 years. On June 4, 1942, in Bradenton, Florida, they put their love into writing by marrying each other. This moment was the start of their permanent matrimony – a love always.
The two first met in 1941 at a college basketball game where they watched Lyle, who was starring at Clark Atlanta University. Eleanor and Franklin’s romance grew rapidly, and soon after their wedding Eleanor was expecting their first child. During their time in D.C., they welcomed three children into their family, including their daughter Angela.
WWII veteran Lyle Gittens, who fought in Italy, was a member of the US army’s 92nd infantry division. After the war, Haskins returned to start a very successful basketball career. His incredible determination and skill ultimately landed him in Clark Atlanta University’s men’s basketball hall of fame. His passion and love for the game of basketball was always an important pillar in his life.
At 69, Bronx native Eleanor Gittens had her first academic party — her doctoral urban education degree from Fordham University. She whole-heartedly adopted the couple’s commitment to education and public service. Both Eleanor and Lyle successfully passed New York’s civil service exam and began working for the city and state in their own careers in government work.
Their life together has been 53 years of adventure and continuous building each other up.

To be nearer, Eleanor moved to Miami where Angela was studying. Although she is no longer traveling as much, her passion for travel remains strong and her favorite destination remains Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. Their creativity, resilience and joy have guided them to find solutions together, which they cultivate each day.
Throughout the year, Eleanor and Lyle have given us a glimpse into what has made their partnership last for more than 85 years. For them, being a good friend with her and having fun together became bedrocks of their long-lasting relational connection.
