Afua Kyei, Chief Financial Officer, Bank of England. Recently, she was named one of the top 100 black Britons by the UK’s Guardian newspaper. This new accolade is another recognition of her historic accomplishments and contributions to the financial services industry. When he was appointed in 2019 at just 36 years old, Kyei became the youngest exec. He further etched his name in history as the Bank’s first black executive officer.
Having grown up in South London, Kyei’s path was first paved by his impressive academic achievements. She did very well academically, gaining six A levels and going to university one year early. After that she completed her studies and became a chartered accountant. This momentous milestone was the stepping stone for her continued success as a leader in the world of finance.
Kyei’s journey to topping the ranks as the first Chief Financial Officer was a result of different purposeful steps and sacrifices made over time. Her appointment was a groundbreaking moment not only for her career, but for representation in the often-male and white financial industry. As she oversees the Bank’s budget and bottom line, Kyei still makes time to be an engaged and active parent despite her busy career. She is the mother of four energetic children, all under the age of nine. She impeccably balances all her professional endeavors while raising her family.
Kyei has made both personal and professional history with her historic win. She raves about her romanticization of childhood as she indulged in Enid Blyton novels and Boyzone. These experiences developed her character, grit and determination as she set out to make her mark on the world.
Afua Kyei was recently named one of Britain’s most influential black people.
