Afua Kyei Named Britain’s Most Influential Black Person

Afua Kyei, recently crowned as Britain’s most powerful black person. This is an extraordinary accomplishment just two years into her tenure that speaks to her profound impact on the financial sector and her bold leadership. Kyei’s banking career included her current position as Chief Financial Officer at the Bank of England. She has made history as the institution’s first-ever black executive officer and its youngest in 325 years. Kyei has won this recognition despite and while skillfully managing her work-related priorities. She is a deeply committed, hands-on mom of four kids under the age of nine.

Having grown up in South London, Kyei’s formative years were largely influenced by her desire for acquiring knowledge. She was always at the top of her class, going to A-levels with six sufficient As, and starting university a year early. Her educational opportunities unlocked her future—the ability to become a chartered accountant, for instance. This accomplishment propelled her to a successful finance career as well. At only 36, she was appointed Chief Financial Officer of the Bank of England. This achievement demonstrates her commitment and outstanding abilities.

Kyei’s story is one of personal and professional success, deeply connected to her own experience. As a kid she found happiness in the pages of Enid Blyton’s novels. She loved listening to Boyzone, thankfully both of which contributed to her eclectic but wholesome childhood. These influences have become ingrained in her outlook and practice, at work and at home.

The BBC Radio 4 programme, fronted by Mark Coles, recently broadcast Mark Kyei’s fascinating life story. Her friends, family, and colleagues added their perspectives in the documentary. Together, they reminisced about her incredible journey and illustrated the tremendous, positive impact she’s created for everyone in her orbit. These conversations only highlight her remarkable career achievements. Beyond this, they show us the values that guide her in life—not just as a leader, but as a parent.

It has not been easy for Kyei to juggle her responsibilities to the Bank of England and as a mother. Even still, she is able to deftly balance each task. Her capacity to balance these pressures and remain a brave advocate continues to inspire everyone, especially those of us with shared lived experiences.
