Kiefer Sutherland Takes Center Stage in “Tinsel Town”

Kiefer Sutherland is getting a lot of attention for his return to the big screen in his latest role, “Tinsel Town.” He is surrounded by an ace cast that features Danny Dyer and Rebel Wilson. Sutherland is perhaps most recognizable for his legendary performance as Jack Bauer in the award-winning television show “24.” Now, he’s making his move into the realm of theatre with this film, which documents a black-tie small-theatre production of “Cinderella.”

Shot in a small, vibrant town, “Tinsel Town” embodies the magic of local community theatre. His Canadian connection, with a grandfather from Falkirk, certainly does not hurt his uniqueness. The only choice, really, for an actor who understands the British sensibilities that this character requires. He’s so proficient that he almost disappears into the narrative, which is focused on the complexities of staging a pantomime.

It’s no accident that Sutherland and Steinberg’s “Tinsel Town” was the top-rated pilot. Though he was the original second choice for the role, he has become an indispensable part of every production. His onscreen chemistry with co-stars—especially leaden-footed, quick-witted throwing star Colman “Rebel” Wilson and British lion Danny Dyer, has been noted by director Chris Foggin. Sutherland’s and Dyer’s collaboration in particular stood out.

“Everyone has to work with Danny Dyer: the love and enthusiasm he brings is just brilliant. Them two got on straight away. We filmed some scenes at a Wakefield theatre, and in between rehearsals they would go off and fight with a stunt coordinator.” – Chris Foggin

In an unbelievable stroke of luck, during the production Sutherland was schooled in the local culture and customs. One day, while walking around the neighborhood, he saw this huge colorful billboard promoting a British pantomime theatrical performance. Most importantly, it rekindled his fire to work in this exciting, dynamic space of theatre.

Foggin noted that Sutherland shared personal anecdotes about his experiences in the area, including his fondness for a particular pie shop in Wetherby.

“Kiefer actually told us about a great pie shop in Wetherby,” – Ray Fearon

Sutherland’s transition from high-energy action figures to more whimsical stage roles illustrates his adaptability as a performer. His pedigree reads like a list of lethal assassins, from the ever-persistent Jack Bauer. This is a direct reversal of the jubilant frothiness required for pantomime. He has embraced this challenge wholeheartedly.

In “Tinsel Town,” Sutherland’s character is far more than an actor. He’s incredibly hands-on in the creative process of bringing the production of “Cinderella” to life. Lucien Laviscount shared insights into one of the film’s comedic highlights, which involved Sutherland’s interactions with Mawaan Rizwan.

“The funniest moment was a scene with Mawaan driving a VW minibus,” – Lucien Laviscount

As production went on, Sutherland was deeply immersing himself in the rehearsal process. To prepare and further establish authenticity for the role, he even took on fight choreography. It’s no wonder that so many Mickeys — performers and crew members — have found their lives transformed thanks to his ability to fully dive into character.

Sutherland’s path through “Tinsel Town” is a powerful reminder of his immeasurable talents. More than that, it’s a celebration of the role of community theatre. This type of imagination-based practice becomes an incubator for community, cultivating connection and inspiring creativity. The goal of the film is to show that side of things, especially when pantos and productions like them are so important to local theater’s lifeblood.

Local community arts activist Maria Friedman, a major advocate for these performances, highlighted their meaning.

“The revenue from those pantomimes keeps those theatres going for the whole year,” – Maria Friedman

The film is sure to thrill audiences, while at the same time shining a light on the commitment and passion of all those working in local productions. Sutherland’s talents add considerable star power to the fanciful and beautiful coming of age tale. Whether you’re a long-time fan of his work or just getting started, there’s much to discover.
