Peter Mandelson, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to the United States, has been dismissed from his position following revelations about his close ties to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. When faced with this situation, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer chose to act straight away. This followed alarming new information about Mandelson’s troubling connections to Epstein that became available.
The motion to dismiss follows closely upon the release of documents by U.S. legislators that underscored Mandelson’s ties to Epstein. Among the many documents released was a letter in which Mandelson called Epstein his “best pal.” Mandelson’s statement around the time of that conviction was itself criminal. This proposal created an outcry from local officials.
“In light of the additional information in emails written by Peter Mandelson, the Prime Minister has asked the Foreign Secretary to withdraw him as Ambassador,” a statement from the Foreign Office indicated. This move is a signal of how seriously the U.S. government is treating the whole situation.
Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein has drawn scrutiny since Epstein’s notorious criminal activities came to light. Epstein, accused in federal sex trafficking charges of running a teenage sexual slavery ring, died by suicide in prison in 2019. These new documents provide further context about a wide range of questionable interactions between Mandelson and Epstein, adding to the former ambassador’s already tenuous standing.
The U.K. Prime Minister’s decision could not have been made without a full recognition of the victims of Epstein’s crimes. Specifically the recommendation from Peter Mandelson that – in his view – Jeffrey Epstein’s first conviction was unjust and should therefore be overturned. In view of that, the Foreign Office has removed him as Ambassador immediately. They continue, as they told us on our call, to be always aware of the victims of Epstein’s crimes.
Mandelson had met with then-U.S. President Donald Trump on May 8, 2025, at the White House, which further intensifies scrutiny regarding his advisory role and influence within U.S.-U.K. relations.
