In her own experience, single mother Nicola Skinner found a rewarding new way to vacation that completely circumvents prohibitive family holiday costs through house-sitting. This adjustment has not only improved her mood but has deepened her connection with her daughter, Polly. Her journey began after she house-sat for a friend in Dorset. Though terrifying at first, this experience soon unlocked a new sense of adventure and connection.
During a recent 10-day house-sit in Sussex, Skinner looked after a friendly Labrador named Buzz while his owners traveled abroad. This new chapter allowed her the opportunity to enjoy daily dog walks with Polly. Together, they ventured to some of the stunning local natural spaces. She was amazed at how lighter and happier Skinner seemed after years of dealing with diabetes. She attributed this newfound happiness to the natural light and time spent with her daughter.
Skinner points out that she was happy to pay £99 a year for a house-sitting website. This unique set-up allowed him to live rent-free at various homes by house-sitting and pet-sitting. This innovative approach to vacationing has allowed her to enjoy new environments without the financial burden typically associated with traveling.
While researching Sussex, they stopped by the Temple of the Winds, which became the most fabulous visit they can ever remember. Once there, they took in all the incredible views and deepened their discussions through breathtaking experiences. She told us these moments brought her closer to Polly, ensuring every experience they shared together became even more special.
Once home, they were left to continue to enjoy the fruits of that adventure住む. Skinner and Polly unwind in their beautiful garden as they discuss their mutual love for “Ghosts,” the hit television series. This simple joy further exemplified how their connection has evolved through shared experiences.
Alongside the Sussex excursion, Skinner has had other relaxing breaks—including to Mallorca with a friend and her kids. She shared how house-sitting helped find an adventure she didn’t even know she needed. It gives her a chance to connect with Polly while working with animals in a variety of environments.
Skinner is house-sitting for second time so, for next four days, she’s looking after someone’s house in Surrey. In the meantime, she’ll be raising a whippet! She wants to go even further afield, too: she hopes to explore a little house-sitting overseas next year. Finally, they are both eager to learn and try new things. Together, they both can’t wait to learn about new places and cultures.
