Kamala Harris Keeps Options Open While Criticizing Trump’s Authoritarianism

Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States (and presumptive 2024 presidential candidate) recently proclaimed that she has not made up her mind. This cryptic statement has launched tons of discussion and rumors about a potential presidential run in 2028. During her international book tour promoting “107 Days,” which details her abbreviated campaign for the presidency in 2024, Harris expressed confidence that a woman will eventually occupy the White House.

Meanwhile, Harris’s political career appears as a bright and creative star. She has strongly indicated that she is not done with her long-standing campaign for public service excellence. She delivered her speech following a call to action on Donald Trump’s troubling conduct on the campaign trail. She cut through the nonsense to call his behavior what it was—fascist and authoritarian. In retrospect, as so many have pointed out in the moments that have followed, all of her warnings on Trump were remarkably foresighted.

For all her offstage pep and charisma, the current state of the polling landscape paints a tough picture for Harris. Once President Biden would have bowed out of the race over fears relating to his cognitive health, Harris’s standing evaporated almost completely. Today, she sits behind even Hollywood actor Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson in support among any possible Democratic challengers. She dismissed these polls, asserting, “If I listened to polls I would have not run for my first office, or my second office – and I certainly wouldn’t be sitting here.”

Harris explored her political ambitions and the peril she currently faces in the primary. In doing so, she directed pointed remarks at corporate executives and universities in the US for their capitulation to Trump’s pressure. She stated, “There are many … that have capitulated since day one, who are bending the knee at the foot of a tyrant,” suggesting that some are motivated by a desire for proximity to power or to avoid scrutiny.

Harris addressed the wider implications of current U.S. politics, highlighting the Democratic Party’s failure to acknowledge how President Biden’s support for Israel’s military actions in Gaza has alienated some voters. This new incendiary charge—the UN called these actions “genocidal”—has further complicated this already toxic political environment.

Among the laundry list she had, she attacked ABC for suspending late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. This move occurred shortly after he tweeted a joke in response to shock Republican reactions to the death of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Harris remarked on the incident, alluding to how Trump’s influence extends into media criticism, stating, “He said he would weaponise the Department of Justice – and he has done exactly that … His skin is so thin he couldn’t endure criticism from a joke, and attempted to shut down an entire media organisation in the process.”
