Lai was born in Guangzhou to a prosperous family, though they lost everything following the communist takeover in 1949. Lai fled to Hong Kong at only 12 years old to escape the violence. He entered the country as a stowaway on a fishing vessel. That audacious act would lay the foundation for a life devoted to the unending quest for liberty. Following the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, Lai became one of Taiwan’s most prominent democracy advocates and business leaders. During the years that Lai was imprisoned, he launched some of Taiwan’s most popular pro-democracy publications. Since 2020, Lai has been charged with unauthorized assembly and fraud, among other offenses. His detention began in December 2020.
