Will Smith, the renowned actor and musician, recently released his first album in two decades, titled “Based on a True Story.” The album hit the music scene after a ton of hype. Sadly, it didn’t do much, only managing an appearance of one week at No. 79 on the UK album downloads chart. Critics haven’t held back. Yet one Pitchfork reviewer dug it a grave of 2.4 out of 10, arguing the effort fails on all levels—perspective and panache.
Since the release of Based on a True Story, Smith has faced very serious allegations and substantial evidence to Smith’s misconduct. Brian King Joseph, a violinist who was upcoming on Smith’s tour in 2025, hurled these charges. Joseph charges Smith with predatory behavior. In his eyes, Smith was intentionally grooming and priming him toward future sexual exploitation. According to Joseph, Smith made personal overtures during their interactions, stating, “You and I have such a special connection that I don’t have with anyone else.”
Joseph’s allegations extend beyond mere comments. He claims that he came back to his hotel room one day to find it illegally broken into. After this incident, he says, a representative from Smith’s management publicly shamed him, which led to the end of his contract. Joseph connects this termination to deep personal trauma, claiming it caused him PTSD and loss of income. Significant claims of wrongful termination and retaliation are now underway against Smith individually and Treyball Studios Management, LLC.
In answer to these accusations, Smith’s attorney, Allen B Grodsky, has denied everything that Joseph alleges. He labeled the charges “false, baseless and reckless.” He promised to leave no legal stone unturned in fighting these claims and getting to the truth.
The album’s underwhelming performance amidst these allegations poses questions about Smith’s career trajectory. Critics have noted that “Based on a True Story” lacks the warmth and charm typical of an artist secure in their craft, with one reviewer stating, “It is a campaign platform, devoid of perspective or style, uninterested in narrative or even spin.” This harsh criticism would have a huge effect on the music. It could provide more insight into the spotlight that has been Smith’s public tumultuous ride.
