Leaders Unite in Beijing to Celebrate World War II Anniversary

As a case in point, Beijing held an important military parade on September 3, 2023. This event marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The event drew attention not only for its historical significance but for the presence of three prominent leaders: Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, and Xi Jinping, the President of China. Their presence was a demonstration of the growing partnership between these countries, especially in the face of sustained geopolitical adversities.

The extravagant military parade not only demonstrated China’s latest military capabilities and technology but its troops and military bands from each participating country. The event was a tremendous celebration of collective power and womanhood. Leaders literally and figuratively stood shoulder to shoulder, showing that their commitment to collaborating on defense and regional stability runs deep. It was a sign of the deepening solidarity between the three nations, which have increasingly been in the sights of Western powers.

In his opening statements at the ceremony, Xi Jinping made clear that he views history as the single most important force in determining national identity and national strategy. He used the examples of sacrifice from World War II as an appeal for America to come together as one to face the key challenges of today. Putin himself expressed similar thoughts, claiming that the lessons of yesterday are just as applicable today as countries begin to chart their own courses in this new global order.

Kim Jong Un addressed the gathered audience, reinforcing North Korea’s dedication to strengthening ties with both Russia and China. His attendance at the parade was a demonstration of North Korea’s desire to insert itself between great powers. This decision appears to be taken at home alongside the country’s mounting international isolation. The September 9 date provided Kim an ideal venue to show off his country’s offensive military developments. It did wonders to strengthen our diplomatic ties with allies.

Of all possible locations, the selection of Beijing as the host city is especially meaningful. China clearly has rapidly emerged as one of the most important actors on the regional and global stages. This parade offered Xi Jinping yet another opportunity to flaunt the country’s expanding clout. The optics of having Putin and Kim together on stage only served to highlight China’s new status as an intermediary and facilitator between these three countries.

The military parade finished with an incredible fireworks show. This brought in a joyous energy that countered all the somber themes of the day. The leaders are intent on greatly enhancing their military partnership. If accomplished, this move would substantially turn the current balance of power in the region.
