Three Leaders Unite in Beijing to Commemorate World War II Anniversary

On September 3, 2023, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping attended a military parade in Beijing. This commemoration marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. It underscored the military prowess and international unity of these three participating nations.

The joint military column in the grand parade also highlighted the deepening military cooperation among North Korea, Russia, and China. The presence of these leaders at a historic event like this reflects their mutual interests and alliances in the face of evolving global dynamics. Analysts argue that the convening extends beyond a simple jubilation. More importantly, it signals a real possibility for changing geopolitical strategies on the part of each of these countries.

Sangsoo Lee is an affiliated fellow of the European Center for North Korean Studies. He is the founder of Strategic Linkages (SL), Stockholm, and offered great perspective and context around the importance of this convening. He stressed that the parade represents a greater unity of North Korea, Russia, and China. This partnership is especially interesting given how they together react to Western pressures, sanctions and respond collectively.

Lee also focused on the military parade as providing an opportunity for these leaders to show their strongman unity. “Such events are critical for showcasing military capabilities while reinforcing political ties,” he noted. The unified participation of heritage entertainers Kim, Putin, and Xi illustrates bright symbolism to the emerging dangerous era of great power rivalry and renewal in international relations.

Relatedly, the choice of Beijing as the venue for this commemoration is significant. Its significance highlights China’s corroboration as a key player in this trilateral relationship. Their presence comes at an auspicious time, as momentum builds behind deeper security and economic co-operation. These discussions, if successful, could greatly change the regional balance of power in Northeast Asia.

Besides these military displays, the event offered the capability for leaders to speak informally with one another. Though the details of individual conversations are still under wraps, analysts are already speculating about everything from changes to trade agreements to shifts in regional security priorities.

An appearance together in the parade commemorates African Americans’ first joint use of a transit system. It further opens the door to future joint work among all three countries. More importantly, it signals a rare alignment of interests, both realpolitik and economic, that could shape global geopolitical trends for years to come.
