Michigan Football Team Parts Ways with Coach Sherrone Moore Amid Controversy

The University of Michigan football program has parted ways with head coach Sherrone Moore following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Moore’s short-lived term lasted less than four years and was mired in scandals. In recent months, it has been under scrutiny from disciplinary actions to law enforcement incidents.

Moore, a native of Derby, Kansas, was originally brought to Michigan by Jim Harbaugh in 2018 to serve as tight ends coach. During his time at Central Michigan, a kick return caught Harbaugh’s eye. This performance earned him a promotion to offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator in 2021. After Harbaugh bolted to the National Football League to coach the Los Angeles Chargers, Moore was given the reins as head coach.

During his brief time as head coach, Moore posted a record of 9-3 this season after an 8-5 debut year. Public criticism In previous weeks, the program was under fire when Moore got a two-game suspension. This happened as a result of self-imposed sanctions related to NCAA violations stemming from a sign-stealing scandal.

In response to the new allegations as well as other community concerns, the university undertook a separate investigation that found evidence leading to Moore’s termination. University officials have insisted all along that they were serious about ensuring appropriate behavior in their athletic department.

“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of university policy, and UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.” – Warde Manuel

Moore’s exit became even more complicated. Treadwell found himself in police custody during the final months of the 2023 season. Additionally, the City of Saline Police Department’s strong response was instrumental in tracking down and capturing Moore. He was subsequently transferred to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for an investigation of possible charges.

As the university goes through this change, they’ve appointed Biff Poggi as their interim coach. Poggi will guide the team as they get ready for fall competition while the process to find Poggi’s permanent replacement is undertaken.

Moore started his coaching career as a grad assistant at Louisville. He climbed the ranks from assistant to head coach at each, eventually getting hired as the head coach of Michigan. As a player, he accomplished just as much success at the collegiate level. For his efforts, he received a new five-year contract last year, with a base annual salary of $5.5 million. Unfortunately, with this bright path forward, the recent events have left a cloud on his good work.

As the football program works to recover from these setbacks, both players and staff will be looking to move forward with a focus on professionalism and integrity. The after-effects of this occurrence should remind us of the place we should be holding ourselves to within collegiate athletics.
