Nico, a spirited 12-year-old who faced the loss of his leg after an aggressive shark attack, endured long-term injuries. Tragically, he died in a Sydney hospital. On January 18, a series of interactions unfolded at Shark Beach in Vaucluse. Nico was temporarily relocated after swimming outside the designated shark net enclosure. His family announced his death after he had been in critical condition since entering the hospital.
Nico trained at the local North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club and embraced the Nippers lifesaving program from an early age. Last year, he was named the most improved swimmer in the under-11 boys division. This achievement further highlights his commitment and love for the sport.
On the day of the attack, he was bitten on two legs. Fortunately, friends quickly descended to help him. One even jumped into the icy cold waters to rescue him. Unfortunately, even with their valiant efforts and timely medical response, within minutes of arriving at the hospital, Nico was declared dead on arrival.
His parents, Lorena and Juan, said in a statement that they were heartbroken by their son’s tragic loss.
“We are heartbroken to share that our son, Nico, has passed away,” – Lorena and Juan.
They described their son as “a happy, friendly, and sporty young boy with the most kind and generous spirit.” They recalled him as a young man full of vigor. This beautiful remembrance rang true with each and every person who ever had the pleasure of knowing him.
When news of Nico’s passing began to circulate, a tsunami of love responded. A now-canceled GoFundMe campaign to support his grieving family had raised nearly $240,000 by Saturday afternoon. Community members shared memories of Nico’s joyful personality and the deep mark he left despite his brief life.
This incident is especially chilling. It’s one of a quartet of attacks reported around the New South Wales coastline over the past 48 hours. NSW police are already reacting to this increasing anxiety. They agreed that they would write an internal report to the coroner detailing the circumstances of Nico’s death.
Friends and community members expressed their sympathies and support for Nico’s family as they mourn the loss of this remarkable young man.
“From one mum to another, my heart is holding you so tightly,” – Kate Barley.
Barley connected her personal tragedy too, having lost her son Khai in a shark attack in South Australia. I understand how awful this waiting and anxiety are. Your beautiful boy, your precious boy is in our thoughts and prayers,” she said.
