Eurostar Faces Backlash Over Compensation After Power Outage Strands Passengers

In recent weeks, Eurostar has been under fire for its handling of compensation claims. This follows a widespread electrical failure last month that stranded thousands of riders. According to reports, on New Year’s Eve, thousands of travelers were caught off guard. Her plans were thrown into disarray by train cancellations and delays up to 24 hours, preventing her from reaching home because of a tunnel emergency.

The carefully laid travel plans of a family of four were completely disrupted. Instead, they found themselves trapped at Brussels station as all Eurostar services to and from London were abruptly suspended. The group spent €2,000 (£1,744) on food, lodging, and other ground transport. Eurostar has provided a £120 voucher in compensation, which is redeemable only on future travel.

Travelers looking to quickly rebook their travels experienced deep anguish. When they connected through Eurostar, it routed them to a Eurostar web page, which displayed no availability for two days. This meant the group of four had to purchase tickets through another site. Unfortunately, they spent €1,230 (£1,072) doing so.

“Our teams are continuing to work through the remaining cases as quickly as possible. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed in line with Eurostar policy and EU regulations.”

As a result, most passengers do not believe they are being adequately compensated. They feel like it doesn’t accurately capture the time, trouble and money they spent during the tumultuous time. As over 4,000 claims remain unresolved, the passengers demand a better solution from the company.

The energy meltdown brought chaos to Eurostar passengers. It affected travel during what is one of the busiest times of the year for rail travel in Europe. The episode underscores the difficulties rail operators encounter to maintain reliable service and provide efficient customer assistance when disruptions strike with little warning.
