Trump Receives FIFA Peace Prize Amid Controversial Claims at World Cup Draw

Former President Donald Trump received the FIFA Peace Award at the 2026 World Cup draw ceremony in Washington, D.C. This moment has fueled a lot of discussion and introspection regarding his history on efforts toward peace. The award, intended to honor individuals who unite people through unwavering commitment to peace, was presented by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who praised Trump’s “exceptional and extraordinary actions to promote peace and unity around the world.”

His acceptance occurs against the backdrop of a Trump-ordered PR blitz surrounding highly dubious claims to have played peacemaker in global conflicts. Across his presidency, he repeatedly claimed victory over a number of military conflicts, even in instances where an active conflict remained. Critics say that most of his promises are just hot air or simply not true. Specifically, they take issue with his prosecution of wars such as the ones in Serbia, Kosovo, Egypt and Ethiopia.

In his acceptance speech, Trump declared, “The world is a safer place now … we’re the hottest country anywhere in the world.” He went on to claim he had “saved millions and millions of lives,” specifically referencing the Democratic Republic of Congo, stating, “over 10 million people killed and it was heading for another 10 million very quickly.” The reality of continued bloodshed in places such as the Congo should make us deeply suspicious of his claims.

Infantino emphasized the significance of the award, stating, “This is your prize, this is your peace prize,” and underscoring the need to “invest in happiness” and carry “a message of peace,” even if it “cannot solve conflict.” He noted that there is a “beautiful medal for you that you can wear everywhere you want to go,” highlighting the symbolic nature of the recognition.

In spite of these praise, critics have rightly noted hypocrisy in Trump’s self-presentation as a peacemaker. His administration’s military strategies, including deadly strikes against small boats in the Caribbean based on questionable legal grounds and threats against Venezuela, complicate his narrative. Most observers are doubtful about his assertions of having played a key role in brokering peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and Thailand and Cambodia. They think these interventions had zero impactful results.

Trump’s actions much closer to home undermine his assertions. His handling of the ongoing Gaza conflict has been roundly criticized. Just as many think his views on the war on Ukraine are overly simplistic and counterproductive. Most of all, he liked to brag about being a peacemaker. As the world witnessed during his time as a negotiator, his tactics made situations more dangerous rather than less.

Assertions to the effect that Trump had ended the conflict between Rwandan-supported rebels and the DRC have been roundly debunked. The ongoing conflict in the region only serves to contradict those assertions. These kinds of contradictions do not undermine the credibility of his assertions but challenge the consonance of his claims with his freshly received honor.
