Dyson, a leading global technology company, is set to relocate its West of England staff to its headquarters in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. This move comes as the company's lease on its Cathedral Square offices draws to a close. The decision will see 180 employees from the Bristol office make the transition to Malmesbury, following Dyson’s shift of its head office to Singapore in 2019. This strategic decision is part of Dyson's broader plan to streamline operations and foster collaboration among its teams.
The relocation underscores Dyson's commitment to innovation and collaboration, which are pivotal to its research and discovery efforts. Bill Wright, Dyson's UK HR Director, stated:
"As a global technology company, our research, innovation and discovery of new technology depends on collaboration, and sparking ideas off each other." – Bill Wright, Dyson's UK HR Director.
In addition to the relocation, Dyson had previously announced plans in 2023 for a £100 million research and development hub on the Bristol waterfront. However, the current consolidation aligns with the company's strategic vision to leverage its headquarters' resources for better synergy among its teams.
The decision to move the head office to Singapore in 2019 was driven by the need to be closer to manufacturing sites and supply chains. This move has allowed for more efficient operations and reflects Dyson's global outlook in business strategy.
Moreover, Dyson has made significant investments in refurbishing 1 Georges Square, which will now be available for lease to other businesses. This offers an opportunity for other companies to benefit from the prime location and infrastructure that Dyson has enhanced.
The relocation also aligns with Dyson's announcement in 2022 to cut up to a third of its UK workforce, a decision stemming from a global review rather than political factors. This restructuring is part of Dyson's effort to maintain competitiveness and operational efficiency in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Dyson has assured that support will be provided to Bristol-based staff to facilitate their commute to the Malmesbury headquarters. This support demonstrates the company's commitment to its employees during this transition phase.
