A woman from Clements, California, was arrested on Wednesday after authorities uncovered a grim scene involving the deaths of 27 horses across multiple properties. The discovery was made by deputies from the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office and animal services officers, who executed a search warrant in the area, about 40 miles from Sacramento. The investigation revealed numerous malnourished horses with limited access to food or water, highlighting severe neglect.
Authorities identified the suspect as Jan Johnson of Clements. She was taken into custody and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail facing multiple charges, including cruelty to an animal, threatening a public official, and criminal threats. During the search, officials also found her in possession of a short-barrel shotgun.
The investigation unfolded on Wednesday when officials searched several properties in Clements. The situation was particularly dire, with four horses and one bull needing to be euthanized due to extreme neglect. The conditions prompted immediate action from animal services and local veterinarians.
“Unfortunately, four horses and one bull had to be euthanized due to their extreme neglect. Animal services officers and veterinarians are still currently evaluating additional horses and animals due to the size of the property,” stated authorities.
In addition to those euthanized, 16 horses were rescued and are now receiving care from the Oakdale Equine Rescue. The rescue team is committed to providing proper nutrition, medical attention, and rehabilitation for these animals.
