The Kremlin is closely monitoring the escalating tensions between the United States and its allies, as Russian President Vladimir Putin expresses optimism about meeting US President Donald Trump. This anticipated meeting aims to address critical issues such as the ongoing war and fluctuating energy prices. Meanwhile, European leaders are set to convene in Brussels on Monday to discuss the looming threat of US tariffs, which are scheduled to take effect on Tuesday. The situation has sparked concerns across global markets and among Ukraine's leaders, who fear being forced into an unfavorable peace agreement with Russia if US support wanes.
The United States has recently imposed tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, with the European Union potentially next in line. This development has sent shockwaves through international markets, raising alarm among European officials. The European Commission has vowed to "respond firmly" should these duties be enforced. European leaders remain skeptical of further sanctions on Russia and continued financial support for Ukraine, exacerbating existing tensions within the region.
Putin praised Trump on Sunday, asserting that his administration would "restore order" in Europe. He criticized current European leaders for what he perceives as a lack of conviction in their beliefs. Putin drew comparisons with former European leaders such as France's Charles De Gaulle, Jacques Chirac, and Germany's Gerhard Schroeder, whom he admired for having their own opinions and the courage to act on them.
"Today, there are practically no such people there," said Vladimir Putin.
"had their own opinion and the courage to fight for this opinion, to express it, to talk about it and to try to at least implement it in practical work," he added.
In contrast, Putin expressed confidence in Trump's ability to quickly establish control over the situation in Europe.
"I assure you: Trump, with his character, with his persistence, he will restore order there quite quickly. And all of them, you will see — it will happen quickly, soon — they will all stand at the feet of the master and will wag their tails a little. Everything will fall into place," Putin remarked.
The imposition of US tariffs presents a significant opportunity for Russia, as its trading partners are likely to endure severe economic consequences. This potential weakening of economic ties between the US and its allies could strategically benefit Russia in the long run. Despite these developments, Ukraine remains apprehensive about being compelled into a "bad" peace deal with Russia if the US reduces its financial backing.
The US tariffs have sparked criticism from Trump towards NATO allies for failing to meet defense spending commitments. He has warned European leaders that they must take responsibility for their own security. This stance has further fueled skepticism among European leaders regarding additional sanctions on Russia and financial aid for Ukraine.
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for the Kremlin, emphasized that it is up to those countries involved in the current tensions to resolve the situation.
"Let those countries that are participating in this process sort it out," Peskov stated.
