Musk Polls Public on Rehiring Staffer Linked to Controversial Tweets

Marko Elez
, a 25-year-old staffer, resigned from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team on Thursday. This decision followed the exposure of a series of inflammatory posts linked to an X account associated with Elez. The posts, which included statements advocating for racism and eugenics, prompted widespread scrutiny and concern.

The DOGE team, which Elez was a part of, operates under the purview of the White House and has been tasked by President Donald Trump with cutting federal spending and reducing the U.S. government workforce. Elez and another staff member had recently been granted access by a federal judge to the payment system of the U.S. Treasury, highlighting the significant level of trust placed in them.

The Wall Street Journal brought attention to Elez's connection with the X account in question. One particularly alarming post stated:

"Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool" – The Wall Street Journal reported (an X account)

Following these revelations, Elon Musk, who owns the social media platform X, launched a poll on Friday asking users if Elez should be rehired. The poll simply offered "yes" and "no" options for users to express their opinions. This move by Musk adds a public dimension to the internal decision-making process regarding Elez's future with the DOGE team.

The controversy surrounding Elez's resignation raises questions about the vetting process for individuals in positions of governmental responsibility, especially those with access to sensitive financial systems. The White House has yet to comment on the situation or on Elez's potential rehiring.

Elez's departure and the subsequent public poll highlight the broader implications of social media conduct for professionals in high-stakes roles. The incident also underscores the challenges faced by teams like DOGE, which are tasked with critical governmental functions amidst personal and public controversies.
