Saquon Barkley, the Philadelphia Eagles running back, has come to the defense of pop sensation Taylor Swift after she faced boos from sections of the crowd during Sunday's Super Bowl. The incident occurred when Swift, known for her ties to Philadelphia, was booed by some Eagles fans. Despite her roots and past support for the team, Swift's recent appearances at Kansas City Chiefs games and her vocal support for Kamala Harris in the last presidential election may have sparked the discontent.
Barkley, who joined the Eagles from the New York Giants last year, has received a warm welcome from the Philadelphia fanbase. In contrast to Swift's reception, Barkley noted the positive attention he and his family have enjoyed since joining the team. This positivity echoes his experiences in New York, albeit with a more favorable ending in Philadelphia. Barkley expressed gratitude for the Eagles fans' embrace, stating, "Eagles fans just shower you with love.”
The running back also highlighted the broader impact of Swift's involvement in NFL events. He remarked on the importance of her presence in expanding the game's reach globally. Barkley stated, "We’re traveling to Brazil, we’re traveling to Mexico. Apparently, we’re traveling to Australia soon. We’re trying to expand the game, and her being a part of it is only helping it. I don’t get the dislike she’s getting.”
Swift's connection to Philadelphia runs deep, as she grew up near the city and has been spotted wearing Eagles gear in the past. However, her relationship with Travis Kelce, a player for the Chiefs, has seen her sporting Kansas City jerseys recently. This shift may have contributed to some Eagles fans' reaction during the Super Bowl.
Barkley reflected on his move from New York to Philadelphia, noting how his family has been warmly welcomed by the city's community. "And it’s been pretty cool for me and my family ‘cause kind of how things ended in New York. There was always love and support there, but things didn’t end off on a great note, I guess you could say. And to be able to come here and just the way how they’ve taken me in and my family in, and my daughter is the star here. They love my little daughter. So it’s been pretty cool," he shared.
