King Abdullah of Jordan has firmly reiterated his country's unwavering stance against the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and the occupied West Bank. This declaration comes in response to former U.S. President Donald Trump's controversial proposal that could prevent Palestinians from returning to their homes. Trump suggested that his plan to redevelop the enclave, which includes transforming the war-torn Gaza Strip into a "Riviera of the Middle East," would ultimately create jobs and bring peace to the region.
During discussions with King Abdullah, Trump expressed his belief that Jordan and Egypt would eventually agree to house displaced residents of Gaza. He emphasized that the United States contributes substantial financial aid to both countries, although he denied using this support as leverage.
“We contribute a lot of money to Jordan, and to Egypt by the way – a lot to both. But I don’t have to threaten that. I think we’re above that,” – Donald Trump
Despite Trump's assurances, his suggestions have sparked outrage across the Arab world. King Abdullah, maintaining Jordan's position, emphasized the need for humanitarian efforts focused on rebuilding Gaza without displacing its people.
“Rebuilding Gaza without displacing the Palestinians and addressing the dire humanitarian situation should be the priority for all.” – King Abdullah
Jordan, a country already accommodating over two million Palestinian refugees within its population of 11 million, is determined not to take in more displaced Palestinians. However, King Abdullah has shown compassion by agreeing to accept 2,000 sick children from Gaza for treatment in Jordanian hospitals, a gesture praised by Trump.
“The point is how to make this work in a way that is good for everybody,” – King Abdullah
Egypt has expressed a willingness to cooperate with Trump's administration in pursuit of a fair settlement for the Palestinian cause. Yet, the specifics of such cooperation remain unclear as Trump's plan continues to face scrutiny and resistance.
“I believe we’ll have a parcel of land in Jordan. I believe we’ll have a parcel of land in Egypt,” – Donald Trump
Trump's vision for the region includes utilizing parcels of land in Jordan and Egypt as potential relocation sites for displaced Palestinians. He remains optimistic about reaching an agreement that satisfies all parties involved.
“We may have someplace else, but I think when we finish our talks, we’ll have a place where they’re going to live very happily and very safely.” – Donald Trump
