Patti Smith, the iconic 78-year-old musician and writer, faced a health scare during her performance with the Berlin-based group Soundwalk Collective in Brazil. Known for her powerful recitations set to musical backings, Smith collapsed on stage due to a severe migraine. The incident occurred approximately 30 minutes into her recital about the climate crisis, during a series of South American tour dates. Despite the abrupt end to the performance, she reassured fans of her determination to recover swiftly.
Smith, who has collaborated with Soundwalk Collective on several albums since 2016, including their latest project, "The Perfect Vision: Reworkings" released in 2022, has been an influential figure in both music and literature. Her last solo album, "Banga," came out in 2012. Besides her musical achievements, she has penned several acclaimed books such as "M Train" and "Year of the Monkey."
The artist's health has been a concern in recent times. In December 2023, she was hospitalized in Italy for a sudden illness. Moreover, Smith's lifelong bronchial condition necessitated her staying indoors during the pandemic in 2020. Her recent collapse in Brazil further highlights the persistent health battles she faces.
“Unfortunately, I got sick, and the doctor said I can’t finish,” Patti Smith expressed regretfully to her audience.
Despite these setbacks, her spirit remains undeterred. Smith addressed the audience after regaining consciousness, apologizing for cutting the performance short.
“So we will have to figure something out. And I feel very badly,” she added.
Following the incident, Patti Smith and Soundwalk Collective assured fans of her well-being.
“She is now being cared for by the best doctors in the most loving way and will be back on stage tomorrow night [Thursday],” they stated.
Expressing heartfelt gratitude, they conveyed Smith's appreciation for the audience's support.
“Patti says that she is tremendously grateful for your patience and forgiveness and she sends her love to all who attended.”
Her determination shines through another recent statement reflecting on her time during the pandemic.
“To be in limbo almost 10 months, for a person like me who doesn’t like sitting in the same place, it’s been very challenging,” she remarked.
Smith's final tour date concluded on Wednesday. Meanwhile, fans eagerly anticipate a tribute concert in March celebrating 50 years of her seminal punk album "Horses," featuring notable artists like Michael Stipe and Kim Gordon.
