OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Gov, a cutting-edge platform tailored specifically for U.S. government agencies. Announced on Tuesday, this marks the company’s most significant product launch since its enterprise rollout. ChatGPT Gov takes a leap forward in security, surpassing its predecessor, ChatGPT Enterprise. Government agencies can now harness the power of artificial intelligence within their own Microsoft Azure commercial cloud or Azure Government community cloud, allowing them to maintain control over their security, privacy, and compliance needs.
More than 90,000 employees from federal, state, and local governments have already generated over 18 million prompts using ChatGPT since the beginning of 2024. This new platform empowers agencies to feed non-public, sensitive information into OpenAI’s models while operating within secure environments. Kevin Weil, OpenAI's Chief Product Officer, emphasized that these developments reinforce the importance of ensuring the U.S. leads the AI race, without altering OpenAI's product road map.
ChatGPT Gov promises to revolutionize how government agencies manage documents and data. The platform allows for translating and summarizing documents, drafting policy memos, generating code, and building applications. Aaron Wilkowitz, a solutions engineer at OpenAI, demonstrated a day in the life of a new Trump administration employee using ChatGPT Gov, showcasing its practical applications.
The platform is set to be available soon, with potential testing and live use projected within a month. Currently undergoing the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) process, ChatGPT Gov has yet to secure accreditation for handling non-public data. ChatGPT Enterprise, which serves as the foundation for ChatGPT Gov, is also in the midst of FedRAMP evaluation.
OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman was present at the inauguration alongside other tech CEOs and has recently joined industry leaders in expressing admiration for President Donald Trump. Altman remarked on his evolving perspective towards Trump, noting:
"He will be incredible for the country in many ways." – Sam Altman
"More carefully recently has really changed my perspective on him." – Sam Altman
OpenAI's move to introduce a government-specific platform underscores the growing intersection of technology and governance. By enabling agencies to "manage their own security, privacy and compliance requirements," as Felipe Millon highlighted, OpenAI aims to provide a robust and adaptable tool for government operations.
