Instagram Weighs Launch of Standalone Reels App Amid TikTok Uncertainty

Instagram is reportedly considering launching a standalone app for its Reels feature. This potential move was discussed by Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, during a meeting with staff earlier this week. The Information, a publication with a focus on the technology industry, cited an individual who was present when Mosseri made these remarks. The potential decision comes as the future of TikTok in the United States remains uncertain.

The Biden administration has expressed concerns that TikTok, which boasts 170 million users in the US, could potentially be used by China for espionage and political manipulation. In response to these concerns, a law was signed requiring TikTok to either be sold or banned in the US. Although former President Donald Trump granted TikTok a 75-day extension to comply with this law in January, the pressure remains for ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, to adhere to US regulations.

Instagram's parent company, Meta, previously attempted to rival TikTok with the launch of the standalone app Lasso in 2018. However, Lasso was eventually shut down. With TikTok’s future in the US hanging in the balance, the idea of launching Reels as a separate app has gained traction as a strategic move by Instagram.

Mosseri also mentioned the possibility of a 50-50 partnership between the US and ByteDance. This could potentially involve ByteDance as a partner in a joint venture, providing a solution to meet US regulatory requirements while maintaining TikTok’s operations in the country. Despite these discussions, Meta has yet to respond to requests for comment from the BBC.
