The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is currently looking into Congress’ concerns regarding Disney and subsidiary ABC’s actions. They are investigating alleged violations of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) regulations. Disney last month tweaked its executive pay for the second time in a year. They replaced diversity and inclusion as a performance measure with a new standard termed “talent strategy” to more accurately reflect the company’s core values.
In a letter sent Thursday, FCC Chair Brendan Carr directly invited Disney CEO Robert Iger. Moreover, he questioned whether Disney’s DEI initiatives are following FCC guidelines. The FCC should find that Disney’s and ABC’s DEI practices constitute disparate impact discrimination and thus violate equal employment opportunity guidelines. Carr acknowledged the need for accountability. He demanded a sweeping audit of Disney and ABC’s DEI programs, policies, and practices.
“For decades, Disney focused on churning out box office and programming successes,” – Brendan Carr
Disney has come under fire from nearly all sides in response to their DEI agendas. The entertainment giant has been accused of both not going far enough in its efforts and of being too “woke” by rightwing commentators. The backlash only increased after Disney spoke out against Florida’s “don’t say gay” bill, sparking a scandalous battle with Republicans.
“But then something changed. Disney has now been embroiled in rounds of controversy surrounding its DEI policies.” – Brendan Carr
Now recent criticisms have surfaced about the casting of Rachel Zegler. This American actress of Colombian descent has come under fire for her casting as the lead in Disney’s live-action Snow White reboot. Underpinning this is Disney’s continued, though controversial, adherence to its new “talent strategy.”
“We are reviewing the Federal Communications Commission’s letter, and we look forward to engaging with the commission to answer its questions,” – Disney spokesperson
The FCC’s scrutiny of media companies has been notably rigorous under Carr’s leadership since his appointment by former President Donald Trump. Carr has been extremely public on the need to keep media companies accountable to regulatory requirements.
“I want to ensure that Disney ends any and all discriminatory initiatives in substance, not just name,” – Brendan Carr
