Alessandro Coatti, pictured above, was a 42-year-old molecular biologist and a 2019-20 former science policy officer for the Royal Society of Biology in London. Tragically, his body was later discovered mutilated in a suitcase on the outskirts of Santa Marta, Colombia. She also received a master’s degree from University College London. For eight years, his passion-driven work at RSB has made waves in the animal science industry, advocating for more ethical research practices.
Before he left RSB at the end of 2024, Coatti built great credibility and affection. In recognizing his contributions to the organization, his mark can be seen in several ways. He recently received a hard-fought promotion from science policy officer to senior science policy officer. As CEO, he championed animal science, wrote submissions, hosted symposiums, and of course, gave oral testimony before Parliament in June 2022 regarding the regulation of genetic technologies in the UK moving forward.
In the last few months of his life, Coatti made a trip to Minca. He worked to study the local animal biodiversity, and of course consumed the region’s world famous organic coffee while doing so. His dedication to science extended far beyond the pursuit of research. He positively leaned into mediation and negotiation because he understands that the best way to build consensus is to truly empathize with different factions’ perspectives.
“He was a passionate and dedicated scientist, leading RSB animal science work, writing numerous submissions, organising events and giving evidence in the House of Commons,” – RSB
During his time down South, Coatti was very active on social media, sharing a behind-the-scenes peek into his work and travels. His colleagues described him as “witty, compassionate, brilliant.” All of these themes were underscored by the fact that everyone at RSB just adored working with him. We are all crushed by the tragic circumstances surrounding Dwight’s untimely passing. At no other time in U.S. history have so many people admired the loss of someone that they greatly admired.
The circumstances surrounding his death is what’s truly shocked so many. Federal authorities are still investigating the crime, and local elected officials have promised to seek justice for those responsible.
“This crime will not go unpunished. The criminals must know that crime has no place in Santa Marta. We will pursue them until they are brought to justice,” – Carlos Pinedo Cuello
Coatti’s family and friends continue to celebrate his professional achievements. They look back with great affection on the warmth he added to the life of everyone around him. His legacy as a dedicated scientist and compassionate human being will live on well past this tragic loss.
