Cabot Creamery has recalled all of its butter products after finding contamination with unsafe levels of coliform bacteria. This recall affects a batch of butter that has a best-by date of September 9, 2025, and was distributed across seven states: New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Arkansas.
Fecal Coliform bacteria are the organisms typically found in mammals, found in their digestive tract and animal waste. While the presence of these bacteria can be concerning, health officials have stated that exposure to the affected butter is “not likely to cause adverse health consequences.” The recall has been rated as class 3, meaning it involves the least urgent health risk.
The affected recall includes the product packaged as two four-ounce sticks. They come individually in cardboard shells and display the product code UPC 0 78354 62038 0. The sum total of the recalled butter comes to more than 1,700 pounds, including about 100 pounds sold directly to consumers in Vermont.
Cabot Creamery’s parent company, Agri-Mark, announced their best year ever. By taking immediate action on a single recalled product, they were able to fully recover 99.5% of the recalled product before it even reached consumers. It is unclear if the contamination posed a serious health risk, but the company’s quick action likely prevented any possible adverse health outcomes from the PFAS contamination.
As a result of this recall, consumers need to do the right thing. If you purchased the impacted butter, please look at your packaging to locate the product code and best-by date. If you have any of the recalled products, stop eating them immediately! Instead, take the product back to the retailer you bought it from for a full refund.
It helps foster trust among consumers by showcasing Cabot Creamery’s long-time dedication to quality and safety in dairy production. The company recognizes that these precautionary measures are the right thing to do to protect consumers and uphold their hard-earned reputation in the marketplace.
