Backyard Tiny Home Transforms into a Multi-Purpose Haven

In 2021, an innovative solution to housing affordability emerged when a homeowner converted a lofted shed into a 296-square-foot tiny home in her backyard. The final cost of the project, including installation, was about $35,000. ADUs can be incredibly versatile and functional spaces. Although intended for commercial use, this tiny home has since become a sanctuary for Price’s family, showcasing both creative living solutions and entrepreneurial arts.

Price’s journey started a couple of years ago when her younger sister relocated to Atlanta to be near her fiancé. Price also helped her sister’s transition by welcoming her to live rent-free. She suggested that she stay with her in the newly built tiny house for a few months. This setup offered immediate housing relief for her sister, brother-in-law, and nephew while Price tested the value of ADUs.

After they got established, Price’s sister and her family moved to New Orleans and took over their rental agreement. They currently pay $1,200 per month for a space in the tiny home. Despite the financial burden of this unique arrangement, it provided them access to expanded affordable housing. At the same time, it provided Price with an opportunity to recoup her investment. By hooking up the tiny home to her main home’s utilities, Price ensured that her sister’s family had all the necessary amenities for comfortable living.

The home itself was a multi-tasker, housing the Rosenburgs while doubling as their showpiece. For six months, Price herself lived in the space, before a family member—her sister’s family—moved in. That experience gave Price some unique perspective on the daily living experiences and functionality of tiny homes. She then took all that absorbed knowledge and used that to power her new business enterprise.

Price’s support went beyond simply supplying a roof over her family’s head. She made moves to make the most of her small dwelling. From May 2019, she had it listed as a short-term rental on Airbnb. She started charging $89 to $129 a night and found a whole new market—adventurous travelers who wanted one-of-a-kind lodging. Though his success hints at a longer story, Price completely exited the Airbnb platform in 2022 after a strong run. This decision allowed her to shift focus towards what she truly found fulfilling: helping others create their own ADUs.

Price opened a new entrepreneurial adventure that represents a thrilling opportunity. She opened a consulting business focused on helping people build accessory dwelling units, like her tiny abode. Her personal passion for ADUs has driven her team to work on multiple projects focused mainly in California. They just recently turned dirt on their first ADU in Georgia. This expansion is a testament to the growing interest in this housing solution.

The success of Price’s tiny home project points to a larger movement and appreciation for affordable housing alternatives. And thousands of families are taking their first steps in search of better options. They want to lower skyrocketing rental prices and pursue more climate-friendly lifestyles. Price’s story is incredible and really highlights the usefulness and practicality of tiny homes. It sparks the imagination of creative and entrepreneurial would-be real estate developers.
