Actress Ellen Pompeo, the star of “Grey’s Anatomy,” made waves in 2017. She hit a huge home run in scoring a $20 million per year contract! This success was both her personal win and an important win for women in this entertainment industry. Before heading into negotiations, Pompeo wanted the buy-in and blessing of Shonda Rhimes, the creator of the show. Pompeo's primary intention was to ensure she had Rhimes' blessing before making a bold push to become the highest-paid woman on television.
Pompeo contacted Rhimes to get her guidance on how to lobby on her bottom line’s behalf. She emphasized the importance of feeling regarded and valued by the alliance. She was looking to achieve financial independence. It was this wish that galvanized her dream to have sufficient funds to be able to call the shots with total autonomy. Pompeo opened up about it recently on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. She explored the intricacies of her own salary negotiations throughout the panel.
"To be financially independent, to me, is what makes me the happiest and makes me feel the most free," Pompeo stated.
Rhimes, known for her powerful storytelling and advocacy for women, encouraged Pompeo to demand what she believed she was worth.
"Yeah, no one's going to give it to you. You have to ask for it," Rhimes advised Pompeo.
Under Rhimes’ influence, Pompeo went into negotiations with the network, sure of her worth and willing to clearly express her value. Her goal was clear. She wanted to be financially independent, on her own terms. Meanwhile, she wanted to be an advocate for the other women in Rhimes’ workplace.
Pompeo’s unprecedented initiative was based on a deeper understanding of what truly connects the dots. An iron-clad connection exists between money and power.
"I became aware at a really early age that people with money had power," she remarked.
This perception fueled Tameka’s resolve. So, she chose to leverage her space and power to uplift and protect others who don’t have the same privilege as she does.
"How can I amplify someone else? How can I help someone else? How can I lift up someone else that doesn't sit in the position of privilege that I sit in?" she pondered.
