Trump Faces Backlash Over ‘King’ Remark Amid Congestion Pricing Controversy

Donald Trump's recent social media post, where he likened himself to a "king," has sparked widespread criticism and controversy. The post followed his administration's decision to rescind New York City's congestion pricing program. The White House shared Trump's comment alongside a computer-generated image depicting him grinning on a fake Time magazine cover, wearing a golden crown, and standing behind the New York City skyline. This move has drawn ire from political figures and citizens alike, who view it as an overreach of power.

The congestion pricing program in question had been legally approved by New York State and sanctioned by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT). New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a firm statement in response, emphasizing the importance of adherence to laws rather than arbitrary rule.

“We are a nation of laws, not ruled by a king.” – Kathy Hochul

Hochul underscored that the U.S. does not operate under a monarchy and asserted her commitment to uphold state and national laws. She also mentioned that New York hasn't been under monarchical rule for over 250 years, vowing to maintain this tradition.

“New York hasn’t labored under a king in over 250 years. We sure as hell are not going to start now … In case you don’t know New Yorkers, we’re going to fight. We do not back down, not now, not ever.” – Kathy Hochul

The backlash extended beyond New York, with voices from various political spheres joining the chorus of disapproval. Virginia Representative Don Beyer expressed via X that the U.S. does not have kings. Similarly, Justin Brannan, a New York City council member, condemned Trump's statement and highlighted that federal government decisions should respect state-approved laws.

“Doesn’t matter what u think of congestion pricing, federal government doesn’t get to make this decision. NY State passed a law, USDOT approved it. No matter what corrupt deal Donald Trump made with the Mayor, he isn’t king. Only fools concede to false power. It’s an illusion,” – Justin Brannan

Additionally, David Hogg from the Democratic National Committee urged Republicans to stop labeling Trump as a king, while Illinois Governor JB Pritzker reaffirmed his allegiance to constitutional governance.

“As governor of Illinois, my oath is to the constitution of our state and our nation. We don’t have kings in America, and I won’t bend the knee to one.” – JB Pritzker

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has taken legal action to maintain the integrity of the congestion pricing program, reinforcing its importance as a vital component of New York City's infrastructure and economic future.

“Public transit is the lifeblood of New York City and critical to our economic future – as a New Yorker, like president Trump, knows very well.” – Kathy Hochul
