To that end the Trump Organization recently started selling new red hats embroidered with “Trump 2028,” encouraging supporters to, “The future looks bright! This announcement is perfectly timed with Donald Trump’s freshly laid out plans for a potential political comeback. During a wide-ranging television interview broadcast on Sunday, he suggested that while he appreciates the support for a third term, he recognizes the constitutional limitations that currently prevent such an endeavor.
In the brief television interview, Trump thanked the presidents of the National Park Service and U.S. He stated, “because they like the job I’m doing, and it’s a compliment. It’s really a great compliment.” Even in writing the 22nd Amendment, he understood its weaknesses. Ratified in 1951, this amendment limits anyone from serving as president for more than two elected terms.
Though the amendment conundrum, as he described it, stole any chance of a third term away, Trump said there are people who are hoping for just that. He emphasized his intention to complete his current term, saying, “I’ll be an eight-year president, I’ll be a two-term president. I always thought that was very important.” He added that he envisions handing over the presidency to “somebody, ideally a great Republican, a great Republican to carry it forward.”
When pressed on the integrity and nature of the ongoing janus-faced attack against constitutional due process for immigrants, Trump faltered. He remarked, “I don’t know. I’m not, I’m not a lawyer. I don’t know.” His remarks were in response to questions about whether he would respect constitutional rights on this emerging concern.
Back in January, Tennessee Republican Congressman Andy Ogles was the first to act. Mechanically, this proposal would require an amendment to the Constitution, enabling presidents to serve a maximum of three terms. While Trump did not directly endorse this resolution, he acknowledged the discussions surrounding it and reiterated his understanding of the existing constitutional limitations.
“I have to respond by saying, again, I have brilliant lawyers that work for me, and they are going to obviously follow what the Supreme Court said,” Trump stated when asked about legal interpretations regarding presidential terms. “What you said is not what I heard the Supreme Court said. They have a different interpretation.”
As the Trump Organization expands its merchandise offerings with Trump 2028 apparel, including the newly launched red hats, the former president remains focused on his current tenure. Though still mum on who might succeed him one day, he did voice his respect for a number of Republican leaders. “It could very well be … I don’t want to get involved in that,” he said. “I think he’s a fantastic, brilliant guy. Marco is great. In fact, I’d wager most of them are really fantastic.
