Mexico Seeks Compensation from MrBeast Over Controversial Chocolate Video

The government of Mexico has officially requested reparations from YouTube star MrBeast. Under his direction, his production company is accused of digging up several of the country’s ancient archaeological sites to boost a chocolate brand. The controversy centers around MrBeast’s video, titled “I Explored 2,000 Year Old Ancient Temples,” which has garnered approximately 60 million views since its release on May 10. In this video, the popular content creator showcased his adventures in the ancient Maya cities of Calakmul and Chichén Itzá.

This video-streamer is known for his wild bombastic challenges as well as extensive philanthropic work. He has built a mind-blowing audience of 395 million subscribers on YouTube. His latest foray into this wasteland of appropriation included promoting his own line of snacks which he called “Mayan-approved” snacks. So far, this unusual advertising campaign has agency officials in Mexico City and many Mexicans up in arms.

The National Institute of Archaeology and History (INAH) has filed a formal complaint against MrBeast’s production company. They claim that the company violated agreed-upon protections for the ancient sites. The INAH made clear its strongest condemnation towards those profiting from Mexico’s cultural heritage for commercial benefit.

“The use of the image of the archaeological sites for the advertising of commercial brands for private profit is unacceptable,” – National Institute of Archaeology and History.

Now, President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Mexican government are looking for answers. They’re curious about the deal that allowed MrBeast to get access to these valuable cultural landmarks. The preferable treatment this new law offers to foreign influencers has a number of locals up in arms.

Tour guide Jose Elias Aguayo, 53, criticized the situation, stating, “Restrictions and regulations should apply to everyone: domestic tourists, foreign visitors, as well as us locals.” His comments underscore a rising uneasiness among the industry over equitable treatment within the regulatory landscape of tourism.

MrBeast’s actions have justifiably caused an uproar. They’ve inspired a larger debate about what responsibilities influencers should maintain when interacting with cultural sites. Others mourn the way social media oversimplifies, sensationalizes, and misrepresents indigenous cultures. Proponents say that this increased attention must not come at the expense of cultural integrity.

“I can’t believe the government’s letting us do this,” – MrBeast remarked during his video.
