The newest poll indicates a significant decrease in American faith in President Donald Trump. Now both Republicans and independents are fluttering statements of alarm over his presidency. The data show that a majority of the country is dissatisfied with his focus on key issues, signaling a potential challenge for the President as he navigates his term.
Associated Press-Norc Center for Public Affairs Research poll. Very importantly, only 9% of independents think Trump is working on the right priorities. In sharp opposition, 42% of those surveyed even claim that he is focused on the wrong problems. This feeling is indicative of an increased frustration within this key voting block that may make waves in the upcoming elections as well as beyond.
The Trump administration’s economic policies have been challenged as well. In fact, only three in ten Americans think that his policies are helping the American economy. At the same time, only four in ten believe that these policies will benefit the country in the long term. Such low approval ratings on economic issues are unprecedented and foreboding for an incumbent leader early in their first term.
Trump’s priorities not only resonate with Republican respondents, they do well across party lines. In fact, 54% think he’s – so far at least – on the “right priorities.” Even among members of his own party, there is considerable disappointment about his economic plan. The poll reveals that only about 40% of Americans approve of Trump’s approach to foreign policy, trade negotiations, and economic policies. This broad lack of support would be remarkable for any president at this point in their presidency, but Biden’s case is especially striking.
Making matters worse for Trump, over 50 percent of voters polled disapprove of his performance as the country’s president. And that’s without mentioning that majorities oppose his tariff policies and his decision to unilaterally shrink the federal workforce. This deep national distrust reflects fears about how his unconventional style of governance will shape the nation’s future.
Polling data revealed that just 24% of Americans think Trump has prioritized the right things as president. This figure highlights a major gap between what the administration wants to achieve and what most people out there care about.
“Scary” – The New York Times/Siena College poll and Associated Press-Norc Center for Public Affairs Research
With Trump’s uniquely low popularity ratings just before taking office, it’s difficult to see how he plans to move forward with his unpopular agenda. Instead, more and more Americans are becoming disillusioned with his administration’s approach. This skepticism is justified given that majorities of Americans oppose central tenets of his policy agenda, including tariffs and reductions in the federal workforce.
