Tragic Discovery in Kachemak Bay as Maynard Family’s Boat and Remains Found

After almost a year of looking, officials have located the Maynard family’s sunken boat in Kachemak Bay near Homer, Alaska. Tragically, during their visit to the site, they found human remains. Mary Maynard, 37, David Maynard, 42, and their two children, Colton, 11, and Brantley, 8 disappeared last August. Their 28-foot aluminum boat swamped and capsized in treacherous waters off south-central Alaska.

Mary Maynard is a cross country traveling nurse who enjoys writing, health, and happiness. Her husband, David Maynard, operates a lawn care business and is home with their two children. On their off days, they love entertaining friends and family. Their heartbreaking loss sparked a nationwide search by the community. It began when local authorities reported they had received word of their boat sinking.

After almost a year of searching far and wide, the U.S. Coast Guard recently suspended its search efforts. Then the case turned around, thanks to three private Alaska companies that helped find the vessel. The vessel was located in Kachemak Bay, at a depth of 180 feet (55 m). Divers then retrieved three human remains inside the wreckage.

The Maynard family’s community of Troy, Texas has been shaken to the core by their loss. Friends and relatives recalled them as a loving, close-knit family that often gushed about how much they loved spending time together. The announcement on the ferry discovery brings some closure but great heartache to everyone who knew the Maynards.

The first search for the family drew the interest of the nation almost immediately. In response, officials were quickly deployed to patrol hundreds of miles of impacted shoreline using aerial and maritime assets. The search teams endured brutal weather and precarious seas every day as they worked to find the missing family.
