Former MLB Pitcher Dan Serafini Convicted of Double Homicide in North Lake Tahoe

Dan Serafini, a one-time Major League Baseball pitcher, was convicted of killing his father-in-law. He shot and injured his mother-in-law during a property dispute. This accident happened in June 2021 in North Lake Tahoe, California. It has since reverberated through the sports community and local residents as a shockwave.

Serafini made his MLB debut in 1996 with the Colorado Rockies. In his 11-year career, he appeared in 104 games with the Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, and Colorado Rockies. The Twins selected him with the No. 26 overall pick in the 1992 MLB Draft. He went on to have a thrilling seven-year career in professional baseball, retiring from play in 2007. Over the course of his career, he has made upwards of $10M. Most of his fortune evaporated from a combination of a divorce settlement and bad investments.

The jury found Serafini guilty of shooting Spohr, the father of one of Erin Spohr. They convicted him for assaulting her mother, 68-year-old Wendy Wood, at the time of the attack. During the trial, testimony came out that suggested things were even worse than they’d thought – that Serafini had been planning to shoot her. Just before the attack, he reportedly sent a message reading, “I’m going to kill those fags one day.”

Samantha Scott, a co-defendant in the case, was charged with the same crimes as Serafini. Spohr took the stand during the trial, saying that she never believed Serafini had killed her father or shot her mother. Touching on the emotional impact her family has suffered from the crime, she called the crime scene “heinous and calculated.” Senator Schumer added.

“It’s been four years since my mom and dad were shot and it’s been four years of just hell,” – Adrienne Spohr

The jury’s verdict represents a tremendous victory for the Spohr family. They have lived through years of trauma since the event occurred. The case has received national attention over the tragic circumstances. The documentary is further brought to life through the lens of a former professional athlete whose story and life journey tragically unraveled.
