Superman and F1 Break Box Office Records Surpassing $500 Million

That leaves the hugely popular “Superman,” which opened in theaters two weeks ago and is still kicking at the top of the box office, powering weekend and weekday moviegoing alike. The latest superhero film has soared to $502 million in worldwide ticket sales, solidifying its position as one of the top-grossing films in recent history.

The current success of “Superman” places it in a competitive landscape alongside other notable films. Zack Snyder’s 2016 release, “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” remains the highest-grossing film in this franchise with $874 million globally. For comparison, “Man of Steel” (2013) isn’t that far behind at $669 million. By comparison, “Justice League” (2017) has grossed $661 million through today, according to Comscore’s data.

Besides “Superman,” Apple’s new theatrical release “F1” has crossed major box office thresholds. The movie has grossed over $509 million in box office receipts so far, making it Apple’s most successful movie release to date. Collectively, this achievement promises a greater milestone than that of any individual tech company. Since coming into the media business, they have produced or co-produced only four feature films with significant distribution.

The success of “F1” can be attributed in part to a strategic partnership with IMAX, enhancing its visibility and appeal among audiences.

At the same time, other films, especially smaller ones, are going big at the box office. With “Killers of the Flower Moon” having grossed $158 million worldwide and with “Argylle,” taking in $96 million in international ticket sales. By contrast, “Fly Me to the Moon” has bombed, grossing just $42 million.

In fact, both “Superman” and “F1” provided stunning box office successes. These totals further underscore the blockbuster phenomenon’s practiced audience hunger for creation that plays up large-stakes pathos and superhero drama.
