Former President Donald Trump recently expressed his disapproval of the G7 leaders’ decision to maintain sanctions against Russia, calling the country’s removal from the group “a mistake.” Trump stated that this move “makes life more complicated,” suggesting that diplomatic relations could be hindered by excluding a major player like Russia from international discussions.
Some G7 members suggested re-inviting Russia, which the group expelled in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea. This action was taken during the administration of then-President Barack Obama. Since then, the collective has aimed to intervene in notable states and geopolitical catastrophes, such as the still ongoing war in Ukraine. The G7 summit is ongoing in Alberta right now. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, governments around the world, and leaders in cities like London are rushing to complete a fourth sanctions package to further cripple Russia’s military and financial resources.
The proposed sanctions are designed to “squeeze Russia’s energy revenues and reduce the funds they are able to pour into their illegal war,” according to Starmer. He stressed that these actions are meant to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to take meaningful peace talks in Ukraine’s interest. Starmer stated, “it is in his and Russia’s interests to demonstrate he is serious about peace.”
For all the intense focus on Trump’s sanctions, he is – genuinely – somewhat dubious about the whole thing. He underscored the financial implications of such measures, asserting, “You’re talking about billions and billions of dollars. Sanctions are not that easy. It’s not just a one-way street.” Trump has indicated that he would prefer to seek an early negotiated settlement between Russia and Ukraine. He thinks this might be the key to resolving the conflict once and for all.
As G7 friends prepare to complete the sanctions package, Starmer stated that their intention was clear. The measures are aimed at starving Putin’s war machine and increasing economic pressure on the Kremlin. He remarked, “The fact is, Russia doesn’t hold all the cards,” highlighting a belief that continued international collaboration can influence Russia’s actions.
