A recent poll has highlighted widespread disapproval among Americans regarding former President Donald Trump’s handling of various issues, particularly those related to higher education and economic policies. According to the survey, 56% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of college and university issues. Of the latter, a striking 42% say they are very disapproving. As Congress deliberates over Trump-backed budget legislation, a notable 51% of respondents emphasize the importance of maintaining current spending levels for programs like Medicaid.
This poll’s results show how deep the chasm runs in American public opinion over the last Trump administration. Although 37% of Americans say they’re excited about what Trump has done so far, a significant 66% are disappointed. For example, he has 40% approval on tariffs and 60% disapproval. Likewise, 39% approve of how he’s handling the cost of living and inflation, compared to 61% disapproval.
In the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, Trump does not fare much better. Here, 44% of respondents approve of the job he’s doing while 56% disapprove. Overall, just 45% of Americans approve of Trump’s presidency, while 55% disapprove. His handling of immigration and border security is at 51 percent approval. Almost half of the country, 49%, strongly or somewhat opposed his handling of it.
Luckily, Congress is still wrestling with fiscal priorities. The poll marks a sizable shift from previous years where a majority of Americans would have strongly opposed maintaining funding levels for key programs. A striking 79% of Democrats prioritize Medicaid spending, while 51% of all Americans believe that Trump’s tariffs will negatively impact their personal finances in the coming year.
Among specific demographic groups, reactions vary significantly. Most astonishingly, 72% of Trump’s MAGA fans approve of his job performance. By contrast, 65% of independents say they disapprove. Additionally, 57% of Republicans view Trump’s handling of university-related matters as heavily approving. This reveals a deep chasm within the party.
The results mirror consistent, overwhelming support for transit from a poll taken in April. That’s why Trump’s overall immigration numbers have remained fairly steady. These trends suggest that while Trump retains strong support among his base, broader public sentiment reflects significant concerns about his policies and administrative effectiveness.
