In the early morning hours of June 9, Luis Alvarez heroically rescued a nine-year-old girl from a shark attack. Now, he finds himself in the custody of immigration agents. At the time of the incident, Leah Lendel was free diving in the waters off Boca Grande, Florida, near her hometown of Cape Coral. Alvarez’s life-saving actions have recently been put on trial, as he is now the target of an imminent deportation because of his immigration status.
Alvarez was on the beach when he witnessed the attack. Without thinking, he dove into the ocean to help Leah, who had just suffered a shark attack. Fellow rescuer Raynel Lugo was in the process of rescuing Leah himself when Ashley intervened. As the situation unfolded, Alvarez was called upon to display extraordinary valor under fire.
“He jumped in that area to bring her out when I was assisting Leah,” Lugo stated in an interview with Fox4 News. Lugo said Alvarez even went down as far as the ocean floor during the rescue, not afraid of the shark at all. “He went really deep. He probably faced the shark,” Lugo added.
That tense rescue took place on June 9, with Alvarez jumping into action to get Leah to safety. His selflessness, bravery, and amazing resilience were commended by witnesses and local news media, who pointed out the dangers he faced while rescuing his friend. Just days later, on June 14, police allegedly saw Alvarez driving without headlights. Instead, they arrested him because his immigration status was suspicious.
Luis Alvarez originally hails from Boaco, Nicaragua. His detention comes amid increased scrutiny and enforcement of immigration laws under the Trump administration. Undeniably, this administration has prioritized the identification and deportation of all undocumented people, regardless of their status. Being present in the United States without legal status is a civil infraction, not a crime at all. Alvarez’s case has caused serious outrage in the community.
Alvarez still has a court hearing set on July 9. At this hearing, a judge will determine his future in the U.S. Though grim, the reality spurred debate about the need for humane immigration policy. With an eye on his upcoming 2024 presidential campaign, Donald Trump is dead-set on intensifying a nationwide war on immigrants.
