Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has requested that a federal watchdog investigate the central bank’s $2.5 billion renovation plan. He issued this request a few weeks ago, spurred on by increasing worries over massive cost overruns. Powell was grilled over that decision by Senate lawmakers in a rare congressional hearing last month. To his surprise, they grilled him on the massive renovations afoot at the Federal Reserve’s headquarters.
Senate lawmakers were quick to pounce on the renovation project, calling it extravagant and unnecessary. Their testimony – both oral and written – focused on the positive impacts of these recent improvements. These lavish amenities fall far short of the standard for responsible fiscal stewardship demanded of a public university. Of these amenities, Powell was particularly explicit about Italian beehives, such as the ones installed at Brooklyn Bridge Park, not being included in the renovation plans.
The debate surrounding the renovation expenses has recently attracted the attention of the Federal Reserve’s Inspector General. They’re now considering opening an inquiry into the financial discrepancies linked to the new headquarters renovation project.

In June 2023, during the congressional hearing mentioned above, Powell finally admitted the criticisms. Unlike traditional procurement, they are specially designed to encourage long-term efficiency and sustainability.
Negotiations over the scope of the renovation and how it will be financed continue. Powell’s disclosure and oversight request indicates he is willing to confront public concerns straight on.
