Historic Wytham Abbey Sees Price Cut of 60% Amidst Ongoing Sale Challenges

Wytham Abbey, a 15th-grade I-listed former Oxbridge alms house in Oxfordshire, had its asking price discounted by one million pounds or 60%. This extreme decrease follows difficulty attracting attention from prospective buyers. Once on the market at £14.95 million, the estate can now be snapped up for just £5.95 million. EVF has made the decision to reduce the price substantially. This change is intended to ensure that all proceeds from these sales are realized for the benefit of high-impact charities.

Wytham Abbey, built circa 1480 from locally quarried limestone, wears its age with magnificent grace. Its gorgeous façade adorned with Tudor arched doorways and beautifully carved Georgian-oak staircase makes it hard to pick a favorite. The mansion is home to eight reception rooms, all decorated by terrific stained glass panes. An enormous white marble fireplace adds to their historic importance as well as their majesty.

Wytham Abbey is set in 9 hectares (23 acres) of verdant gardens and parkland. As an iconic venue, its storied history has seen it host hundreds of esteemed visitors over the years. It has welcomed prominent figures such as Queen Elizabeth I, Oliver Cromwell, Queen Victoria, and more recently, Skype’s billionaire investor Jaan Tallinn and the jailed FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried. The manor was intentionally conceived to be an imaginative meeting ground for technologists and philosophizers. They would unite to address many of the planet’s most urgent issues.

The property’s extraordinary local flavor and history makes this property special. Still, it’s had a hard time finding a buyer since first being listed in 2013. In order to make the sale possible, EVF has received specialist advice from some of the UK’s top surveyors to lower its original asking price.

“As part of its ongoing effort to maximise sale proceeds directed to high-impact charities, Effective Ventures has taken advice from leading surveyors and decided to lower the property’s guide price to encourage offers from actively interested prospective buyers.” – EVF

The price decrease is intended to filter for genuinely interested buyers. These prospective buyers understand and value the historical significance and architectural beauty of Wytham Abbey. The foundation’s commitment to ensuring that the proceeds benefit others as much as possible underscores their intent to leverage the sale for charitable purposes.
