The trial of Ryan Routh, accused of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump, began amidst intense scrutiny and dramatic courtroom exchanges. The incident that initiated this trial occurred in September of 2024. At the time, Trump, the federalist presidential candidate, was on the links at one of his golf courses in Florida. It was the third attempted murder on Trump in only three months.
On that fateful day, Trump occupied the fifth hole. That’s where US Secret Service agent Robert Fercano first saw him. As Fercano tooled the golf cart, she was scanning the course for Trump. Out of nowhere, he noticed a barrel of a rifle sticking out from the cover next to the sixth hole, dangerously close to the ex-president himself. Instead, the agent had less than a second to determine the danger. He said hello to Trump using the then President’s call sign, “Mogul on five green.”
Fercano’s discovery escalated concerns for Trump’s safety, getting law enforcement in such a tizzy they moved immediately on the situation. Authorities eventually arrested Routh, who is now charged with five counts, including attempted murder of a major presidential candidate. The seriousness of the matter only deepened when it became clear that this was not Trump’s first assassination attempt. Just months prior, as it turned out, someone had succeeded in doing so.
With the trial unfolding, Routh’s defense had a difficult time putting together a solid line of argumentation. The lead judge cut short Routh as he started his claim. Moving for his detention, she scolded him both for not raising a substantive defense and for purportedly disparaging the court’s process. This admonishment caused the judge to temporarily relieve the jury while dealing with Routh’s behavior.
The atmosphere in the courtroom became electric as more information about the plot to assassinate her came to light. Prosecutors recounted the circumstances leading up to the confrontation. They praised the quick reaction of the Secret Service and reiterated their importance in protecting Trump while on the campaign trail. We knew from the prosecution’s opening that they were going to lean hard on the violence of Routh’s actions.
