As you’ve likely seen by now, on Tuesday, SpaceX successfully launched its Starship rocket from the company’s new facilities at Starbase in Texas. The launch took place at 6:30 p.m. local time and marked the tenth test flight of the over 400-foot tall rocket. After a string of explosive failures earlier this year and even an explosion that took out SpaceX’s Starship-testing facility, it’s indicative of the company’s resilience and imaginality.
The flight lasted about one hour, after which the Starship rocket achieved nearly all of its key goals. Most impressively, it deployed eight mock Starlink satellites, as part of the Transporter-4 mission, showing off its payload carrying prowess. In addition, on orbit the rocket performed a successful relight of its Raptor engine, validating the design and functionality even further.
SpaceX has accomplished amazing things this year with reusable heat shields. This technology will be key in making the rocket operationally efficient to compete with. The recent launch included a full stress test of the novel heat shield. This important milestone is a key precursor for the rocket’s ability to withstand the extreme forces encountered during re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere.
SpaceX’s path with Starship has been an extremely iterative one, including nine prior test flights that offered key data to avoid issues and refine designs. The most recent success, however, represents a turning point for SpaceX. It further drives NASA’s desire to put astronauts back on the Moon under the Artemis program.
