Though their new life together started in 1969, shaped by respect and uplifting of one another, especially in support of the pursuit of Phillipa’s dream to become an educator. At a time when society was trying to keep women in their proverbial place, John was the exception. His steadfast affirmation of their dreams made him unique among his peers.

As fate would have it, the couple’s romance ignited on that first date. They then spent the night enthralled by iconic performer Johnny Farnham at Lennon’s Hotel in Toowoomba. This magical moment splashed the canvas of their companionship, a stroke that would deepen with each year. They had amazing adventures together. John’s playful yet sincere nature was evident during a casino-themed night when he casually posed a question that would change their lives: “What would you say if I asked you to marry me?” This single moment was indicative of how effortlessly they soothed each other’s souls. Just a few short months after they met, they were married in October, starting their lifelong adventure together.

Whether caring for children or confronting life’s greatest tragedies, John stood unwavering with his emotional and inspiring strength. He wrote 30 letters to Phillipa in their time apart. This monumental feat was a testament to his steadfast resolve while they were separated from one another. In a grand display of affection, he journeyed 1,700km to Menindee simply to be with her. His commitment gave Phillipa the stability she craved, especially after the tragic death of their first-born child.

During their years together, John has always shown the qualities that made Phillipa fall in love with him in the first place. She has affectionately referred to him as “the love of my life.” She goes on to say that he’s “even now, it turns out, still as beautiful” as he was in 69. His ability to stay calm under pressure was evident when he adeptly fixed her electronics, earning him the nickname “cool as a cucumber.”

John’s impact reaches further than individual mentorship. He was instrumental in shaping the decisions of Phillipa’s professional life. She credits her father for actively discouraging her from pursuing a teaching career. He advocated for her appeal to be discharged from the armies due to their marriage. Providing this level of support was key to establishing a deep foundation of trust and partnership that has endured for more than five decades since.

Though now married for over 55 years, John and Phillipa often look back on their story with thankfulness.
