Deadline Approaches for TikTok’s Ownership Transition Amid Ongoing US-China Trade Talks

The urgency for a solution to the app’s future in the United States is reaching a fever pitch. A fast-looming deadline for ByteDance, its Chinese owner, to divest itself from its American operations. September 17 could be the most important deadline of all. If a sale isn’t completed by that date, the engaging social media video-sharing platform could be banned in the U.S., which has created considerable buzz because TikTok boasts some 170 million American users.

The U.S. Supreme Court recently upheld legislation passed in April 2024 that allows for the potential ban of TikTok, emphasizing the government’s concerns regarding national security. The Justice Department described TikTok as “a national-security threat of immense depth and scale,” reinforcing the urgency of the situation.

Despite the very real deadline approaching, the timeline for a sale has been extended at least three times already. That most recent delay indicates where negotiations between U.S. and Chinese officials have been—though negotiations may have finally hit the boiling point. Just ahead of autumn, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent trumpeted a historic “framework” agreement. This agreement was reached amid trade negotiations in Madrid and focuses on allowing for U.S. ownership of TikTok’s American operations.

On Friday, President Donald Trump expressed a growing sense of optimism about the negotiations. He was bullish on progress, announcing that discussions had “gone very well.” He noted that a deal was reached “on a certain company that young people in our country very much wanted to save,” highlighting the platform’s popularity among younger demographics.

TikTok thoroughly disagrees with the Administration’s position that a ban would not infringe the free speech rights of its U.S. users. Our platform has been hammering this argument home. Defenders of the platform adamantly argue that it remains an invaluable forum for creative expression and community engagement.

As negotiations head toward the home stretch, all stakeholders are following the contentious developments very closely. These conversations play an enormous role in shaping TikTok’s future. They will determine the larger course of U.S.-China relations moving forward.
