Texas Hunter Dies Following Cape Buffalo Attack in South Africa

Asher Watkins, 52, was a Texas native and a proud Baylor University graduate. Sadly, he did lose his life on August 3 while on a hunting trip in South Africa. The incident occurred in the Limpopo province while Watkins was tracking a 1.3-ton Cape buffalo, known for its aggressive nature. Watkins had been a seasoned hunter, but did not expect the buffalo to charge back at him. It was run over at high enough speeds (up to 35 mph/56 km/h) to cause fatal injuries.

Watkins was the managing partner at Watkins Ranch Group. The firm enjoyed deep connections to the former-listed Briggs Freeman and LIV Sotheby’s International Realty. His hunting passion, that he frequently shared on his Facebook page, matched his professional achievements. There, he posted dozens of photos of himself posing with animals he’d killed through hunting, like deer and mountain lions.

The hunting trip was arranged through CV Safaris, who verified the circumstances of the horrific event. According to their statement, “On Sunday 3rd August, while on a hunting safari with us in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, Asher was fatally injured in a sudden and unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo he was tracking together with one of our professional hunters and one of our trackers.”

CV Safaris did a great job showcasing the menacing nature of the Cape buffaloes. Not too shabby for such a handsome brute. These animals enjoy a terrible reputation as mankillers, killing dozens and injuring hundreds of hunters each season.

Watkins’s ex-wife, Courtney, took to social media to publicly confirm the news of his death, expressing her devastation over the loss. She expressed her sorrow with heartfelt words:

“It’s a reality that’s still hard to put into words.” – Courtney Watkins

She further added, “Our hearts are heavy as we navigate the days ahead, especially for Savannah as she grieves her dad.” Savannah is the couple’s rebellious teenage daughter. Now she is confronted with the callous reality of having to deal with her father’s death.

>At the time of the attack, Amon had been staying at the safari lodge with their mother, Gwen and stepfather, Tony. They were all on the edge of their seats waiting for Watkins to show. CV Safaris has been in touch with Watkins’s family to offer support in this difficult time.

“This is a devastating incident, and our hearts go out to his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” stated CV Safaris in their message of condolence.
