A shooting in New York City’s Times Square early Sunday morning injured three people, including a four–year-old girl. The incident occurred at approximately 1:20 AM on West 44th Street and 7th Avenue, a location known for its heavy pedestrian traffic and entertainment venues.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), a 17-year-old suspect fired shots. This shooting came on the heels of an argument with one of the victims. It was the second mass shooting that officials confirmed had left three people injured. Emergency services rushed them to Bellevue Hospital to address their wounds. Fortunately, their conditions are stable.
Of the wounded, an 18-year-old woman had a graze wound to her neck. The case study A 19-year-old male with a gunshot wound to his right foot. At the same time, a 65-year-old man was directly attacked and shot in the leg. The NYPD is still actively interrogating a person who remains in custody about the incident. Still, no one has been charged.
This troubling shooting episode occurs just as New York City’s astronomical gun crime has taken a historic downturn. As of August 3, there has been a reported 23% drop in shootings compared to the same period last year. The city only registered 412 shootings from January to July 2025. That’s the fewest in recorded history, at least since the National Crime Victimization Survey started tracking gun-related offenses.
The NYPD is still investigating the circumstances of the shooting. They are continuing to interview witnesses and even trying to track down and re-interview persons of interest, including potential suspects. The department stands committed to doing everything possible by taking all prudent actions to keep this area safe. They pledge to keep them informed as work continues and additional information comes to light.
