Stephen Yaxley Lennon, known better as Tommy Robinson, is having a tough legal week. These lesser issues arise from a surprising encounter with counter-terrorism police. On July 28, 2024, law enforcement intercepted the far-right extremist as he made the first round trip on his own through the Channel Tunnel. He was at the wheel of a £170,000 Bentley Bentayga SUV.
With growing police hostility, Robinson was dangerous and escalating tension with law enforcement. He denied having to share his phone’s PIN, arguing that it had critical journalistic content. The police’s intervention was prompted by what they described as an “emerging threat level” from far-right groups, including Robinson’s past association with the English Defence League (EDL), which disbanded in 2014.
During that stop, authorities discovered Robinson was carrying a large sum of cash. He argued that it was raised to pay for the costs of a counter-rally organized by his supporters at Trafalgar Square the day before. This rally received a big nationalist turnout and represented an important launching pad for Robinson, showcasing his inflammatory influence on anti-globalist far-right activism.
Senior District Judge Sam Goozee was the presiding judge in this case. Third, he ruled that Robinson’s address should remain confidential because there are significant and credible threats against his life. When he was uncooperative with her, she ratcheted up even further. This led ultimately to a trial focused on his failure to comply with the demands of the counter-terrorism police.
Robinson’s political activism has drawn extreme loyalty as well as intense hatred. For the former, his incendiary rhetoric only serves to further division and extremism. For the latter, it makes him an avatar of free speech. His active legal challenges are poised to ignite a broader debate over freedom of speech versus national security.
