Rudy Giuliani settlement with Dominion Voting Systems. He is infamous for his role as Donald Trump’s personal attorney. The settlement concludes years of litigation that originally began in 2021. Dominion has sued Giuliani for $1.3 billion for spreading his lies about Dominion’s role in the 2020 presidential election.
Dominion sued Giuliani for over 50 separate defamatory statements. These allegations pushed the narrative that the election was stolen from Trump and targeted the integrity of Dominion’s voting machines. Giuliani was the driving force behind Trump’s legal efforts following the election. He propagated these lies far and wide across the American landscape using television, radio and podcasts.
The complaint drew national attention to Giuliani’s central role in pushing dangerous, baseless conspiracy theories. These baseless theories delegitimized the outcome of the election. While the case has settled, in early 2023, the parties have insisted on keeping that settlement confidential and neither side would divulge the precise terms.
“The parties have agreed to a confidential settlement to this matter.” – Dominion spokesperson
In response to the original lawsuit, Giuliani maintained that he was “exercising my right of free speech and defending my client.” Still, his legal challenges only grew in the coming years, ultimately leading to more lawsuits and financial woes. In a testimony during his recent court hearing in New York, Giuliani reportedly yelled at the judge, I can’t afford my bills! At the time, his frustration reached a point where it led to self-incrimination through questioning regarding his non-compliance with asset surrender orders.
Giuliani’s legal troubles didn’t stop with the Dominion case. For that, he’s received a $148 million judgment against him for spreading false and defamatory lies about two Georgia election workers. The ruling only applies to Ruby Freeman and her daughter Shaye Moss. In a strange turn of events, he pulled up to court in a Mercedes-Benz. This was the very automobile that he had been compelled to surrender to the workers.
His legal woes didn’t stop there, as Giuliani’s law license came under fire. He was suspended in New York before being ethically permanently disbarred nationwide in July 2024. He subsequently lost his law license in Washington D.C. by September 2024. This was largely due to the fact that he had repeatedly ignored disciplinary calls.
With mounting legal and financial woes, Giuliani nevertheless remained a participant in the ongoing Florida presidential primary circus calmed to a degree. His vote helped Trump win reelection to a second term.
